Why the air
in schools matters.

Air pollution hits vulnerable groups hardest: children and the elderly. The aim of City Air is to see the real picture in schools and to build the infrastructure needed to drive concrete action to reduce it.

We breathe 15 kg of air a day

Every day a person eats 1 kg of food, drinks 2 l of water and breathes 15 kg of air. The air we breathe matters as much as water and food.

90% of our time indoors

We spend 90% of our time indoors, and indoor air can be up to 50 times more polluted than outdoor air.

Children, the most exposed

According to the World Health Organization, 600,000 children die every year worldwide because of indoor and outdoor pollution.

25,000 deaths a year in Romania

Because of toxic air. Pollution causes 34% of deaths from heart disease, 20% of strokes, 18% of COPD and 7% of lung cancer.

Vision: to secure the right to clean air for every child. City Air is a project selected by the Romanian National Commission for UNESCO and supported, through a cooperation protocol, by ANPC, the National Authority for Consumer Protection.

How we measure.

Stations inside and outside the building, with sensors that measure in real time. The pilot project started in 2021, with monitoring stations installed in 30 schools in Bucharest.

  1. 01
Outdoor monitoring - NUBO stations - a real-time monitoring system, with sensors calibrated for PM1 and PM2.5 particulate matter. The NUBO Air system holds MCERTS certification.
  2. 02
Indoor monitoring - Nettigo Air Monitor - sensors that detect polluting particles (PM10 and PM2.5); pressure, humidity and temperature are measured with a Bosch sensor. CE and RoHS compliant.
  3. 03
Real-time parameters - PM1, PM2.5, PM10, plus air temperature, humidity and pressure, measured continuously inside and outside the school.
  4. 04
Open data - all information from the CityAir network is made available to the community: citizens, public institutions, companies, research institutes and universities.

Adopt a school.

CityAir is about community, about our ability to work together. Do you represent a school? Register it in the leading network for monitoring air quality in schools.
